Phuket

I spent the last week in Hong Kong again and with Friday being a Chinese holiday, I decided to take advantage of off-season pricing and head down to Phuket.

I have mixed feelings about the island regions of Thailand. It’s undeniably beautiful and the food is equal to the very best in the world, but it can also be maddeningly dirty and overcrowded. Still being able to pop over for a few days is certainly a privilege.

I chose to stay at The Surin because it offered a secluded stretch of beach that promised to be free of people and trash, and perhaps the ideal location for a lot of do nothingness. The promise has been thus far fulfilled, and I cannot say enough nice things about this little slice of heaven.

Even the weather has mostly cooperated. I arrived Friday at about 11am and was able to soak up some sun then and all morning today before the thunderstorms arrived mid-afternoon. I actually quite enjoy storms in the tropics. The torrential rains and wind rustling palms have a sort of calming effect for me. Sitting here with a coffee and my laptop scribbling away with the sound of distant thunder, I find a kind of romance in it.
